A New Book on Food Co-ops Wants Your Support
An established food journalist is hoping to begin work on a book that will tell the story of retail food co-ops. The book will be titled Grocery Story: The Promise of Food Co-ops in the Age of Grocery Giants.
Author Jon Steinman of Deconstructing Dinner launched a crowdfunding campaign on July 17 to raise the funding necessary to bring the book to life. If the crowdfunding is successful, the book will be published by New Society Publishers – a publisher that first emerged out of Philadelphia's Movement for A New Society in the 1970s. Over 80 food co-ops are helping promote the campaign to their members.
Through his work producing and hosting the Deconstructing Dinner radio show and podcast and his more recent television/web series of the same name, Steinman has been reporting extensively on food systems issues since 2006. Throughout that time, Steinman has also served on the board of directors of the Kootenay Co-op (2006-2016) and spent his final two years as the board president. He authored the May-June cover story for Cooperative Grocer Magazine about the Kootenay Co-op.
“Grocery stores are, by most accounts, the most influential force shaping food systems,” says Steinman. He believes that grocery stores owned by the people who use them are the most effective way to strengthen local food systems and local economies.
The Grocery Story crowdfunding campaign kicks off July 17 through Kickstarter and will run for 30 days. For $20, you can effectively pre-order the E-book or for $36, a paperback copy. All backers of the campaign will receive access to a Q&A with the author when the book is finished and contributions of $36 or more will have their name printed in the book as a Grocery Story Supporter. Some more notable rewards are also offered. As with any Kickstarter campaign, the fundraising is all or nothing and the book will only come to fruition if the funding goal is reached.
